Whiskers is a big sweet tomcat who also had a hard life before coming to Sterile Feral attention recently. He was living outside in a trailer court but did have a person to feed him and offer some shelter on an open porch. As an older un-neutered male, he had been in numerous fights and his ears show that damage. He also had a good sized abscess that has since healed. His person passed away and there was no one in that area willing to take over his feeding or get him the medical care he needed. Your donations are so important to helping us continue to care for cats like Whiskers.
Sterile Feral was notified in desperation by a caring person who did not want him abandoned there. So we took custody of Whiskers and he is now in a Sterile Feral home. Like many of these outside cats leading marginal lives, he needed medical care and neutering first and an inside home for life. He needs much quality food to catch up on gaining weight and affection to learn how to trust.
Whiskers is a shy cat but is making quick progress. His appetite is great and he already plays with a favorite catnip toy and loves his cardboard scratcher. He has even learned to sit on his new mom's lap and love petting.
There is much to be learned from these outside cats. They were abandoned at some point through no fault of their own. Neither Bandit nor Whiskers is feral, so had trusted humans at least somewhat in their lives and that trust was betrayed. Neither cat was neutered so had been in numerous fights leading to injuries and both tested positive for FIV from these fights. FIV is an article topic of itself but does not prevent a cat from being taken into a home and living with other cats. They can live long healthy lives with FIV and do not infect the other cats living with them.
We will go into FIV further another time. We also wish Whiskers a long, happy life and hope for a day when no cat is left abandoned to suffer these harsh realities. These are not cat problems, but people problems and people need to step up to prevent and solve them. We are grateful to be a part of the solution. Best of life to Whiskers too!
